The Advent of Our Lord

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory

¹⁹ And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
²⁰ He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
²¹ And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
²² So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
²³ He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
²⁴ (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)
²⁵ They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
²⁶ John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,
²⁷ even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”
²⁸ These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. (ESV)

(Fourth Sunday in Advent) John the Baptist declares, "I am not the Christ," but only the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord. His work, fulfilled in repentance, is essential for preparing the heart for the coming Savior. We must put away fleshly lusts that we may be ready for Christ's visitation.

Prayer of the Day

Most merciful God, who hast given Thine eternal Word to be made incarnate of the pure Virgin, grant unto Thy people grace to put away fleshly lusts that so they may be ready for Thy visitation; through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth, etc. Amen.

Closing Prayer

O almighty and most merciful God, of Your bountiful goodness keep us, we implore You, from all things that may hurt us, that we, being ready, both in body and soul, may cheerfully accomplish those things that You would have done; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
